Gas pump

With gas prices on the rise, finding the best car gas mileage to stretch your budget is extremely important. According to the latest fuel economy EPA statistics, the most fuel efficient 2008-model cars on the market are hybrids. Whether you're looking for a gasoline, diesel, or a hybrid-powered vehicle, we have a list with several different makes and models to help take some of the guesswork out of which car is right for you.

1.

Being the second hybrid car ever on the market, and the oldest still in production, makes this car very attractive to many buyers looking for a car with staying power. Starting at $20,900, this affordable option offers the best car gas mileage at 45 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. Toyota has already announced incremental improvements that could increase the 2009 Prius mpg into the 50s.

2.

The Accord hybrid offers all of the standard features enjoyed in the top of the line V6 sedan including things like leather seats and an advanced climate control system. The Accord Hybrid is a fuel-efficient mid-size sedan that gets 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

3.

The Civic Hybrid's refined gasoline-electric powertrain eases the pinch on your wallet at the gas pump as the EPA's-estimated city/highway rating falls within the 40 city/45 hwy mpg range. Prices start at $22,600.

4.

The 2008 Altima Hybrid is a carryover from the 2007 model. This 4-door, 5-passenger sedan makes a great family car that gets 35 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Prices start around $25,480

5.

This vehicle runs on biodiesel, not gasoline. Biodiesel is a 100 percent vegetable fuel that doesn't come from petroleum. Since its debut in 1998 the new Beetle has met criticism and triumphed. Looking like the VW Beetles of yesteryear also helped give this model a leg up on the competition. If getting good car gas mileage - 37 mpg city and 44 mpg on the highway - isn't enough to sell you on this car, maybe the nostalgia of owning a VW "Bug" will. It has a base price around $18,000.

6.

Like the Beetle, the Golf also runs on biodiesel. The Golf TDI gets around 37 mpg city and 44 mpg highway, although some owners have reported as much as 50 mpg. Achieving the best car gas mileage depends heavily on driving conditions. It has a base price around $16,000.

7.

After debuting in May 2006, sales of the Camry Hybrid have been second among all hybrids, trailing only the Prius. ConsumerSearch.com lists the Toyota Camry hybrid as the best family car. Its fuel efficient 34 mpg in mixed driving makes it an attractive option. Though this vehicle does get good car gas mileage, it is a little more expensive than some of the other cars on this list with a base price around $25,350.

8.

Toyota has been known for building reliable cars, and since 1968, Corolla has been the car Toyota built that reputation on. Not only that, but the Corolla is the first car Toyota built in America.

9.

The Yaris is the replacement for the Echo line, which was discontinued in 2006. The Yaris has the same motor as the Toyota Prius, but has no electric motors to aid fuel efficiency. Even without electric aid, the Yaris is estimated to get 40 mpg highway and 34 mpg in the city. Base price for the sedan starts around $12,000, with the liftback starting around $11,000.

10.

The 2008 Honda Fit 5-speed automatic gets 27 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway. The Fit Sport is also estimated to get great car gas mileage, with 38 mpg highway and 33 mpg in the city. It seems Honda has geared this model more towards young drivers by including a standard input jack, so you can plug in your iPod. It has a base price around $13,000.

That certainly sounds like an interesting development, Paul. However, readers should proceed with caution when investigating this method of increasing gas mileage.

You can! But how? Miracles? No, no, no. You generate free energy by ENHANCING the EFFICIENCY of your poorly designed engine!!! Your engine uses 20% of the energy stored in that expensive fuel - and WASTES 80% for heat, pollution (unburned fuel!) and vibration. You reduce waste with our technology = "free energy" for you!
