1. Toyota Prius
Toyota's hybrid Prius has long been at the forefront of fuel efficiency, and it just seems to get better every year. The 2011 model gets a whopping 51 MPG (Miles Per Gallon) in the city and 48 MPG on the highway. The mid-sized sedan also seats five people comfortably and has quite a bit of kick for a hybrid, going for zero to 60 MPH (Miles Per Hour) in nine seconds.

5. Volkswagen Jetta TDI
Volkswagen's Jetta is a familiar car model, but its TDI incarnation gets special marks for gas mileage thanks to its clean diesel engine. Diesel prices fluctuate, but count on getting an average of 34 MPG (30 MPG city and 42 MPG highway) in the 2011 model. Volkswagen's Golf TDI also runs on clean diesel and gets nearly identical gas mileage.

This tiny two-seater gets big gas mileage. The four cylinder engine gets 35 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway running on regular gasoline. The 10 gallon tank is small, like the rest of the car, but at less than a gallon of gas to go 25 miles, you won't have to stop and fill up very often.

The Hyundai Sonata gets similar gas mileage to the Honda CR-Z - an average of 37 MPG - but is better suited to drivers who need a little more space and elbow room. The four-seater sedan also has a bit more pep than CR-Z, with a bigger engine and 206 horsepower versus the CR-Z's 122.

If you're looking for a hybrid that drives like a sports car, this Nissan is the one for you. Nissan's Altima is well known as a challenger to Honda's Accord for sporty, midsize sedans, and the hybrid version of this popular keeps that power while serving up an average of 33 MPG. You'll go from zero to 60 in 7 seconds - one of the fastest of all the hybrids.
