Why is it the best

1.

 -The Beach Boys

While this one isn't a traditional love song, it was named the best love song ever by Entertainment Weekly and was ranked number 25 on the Rolling Stone list of greatest songs of all time. The song has been praised by Paul McCartney, who listed it among his favorites. It's also one of the best love songs of all time because it starts with the line "I may not always love you," but then completely refutes it and becomes a painfully sweet song.

2.

 -Elvis Presley

"Love Me Tender" is a perennial favorite that regularly ranks high in lists of favorite love songs. It's a simple song with a lot of meaning, sharing the sentiment we all want to hear from our loved ones: "I love you and I always will." Another great pick from the King is "Can't Help Falling in Love."

3.

 -Al Green

It's hard to hear "Let's Stay Together" and not want to dance. Although the song acknowledges the hard times that come with love, it's a realistic take on romance, so this song is still appropriate for weddings, anniversaries and informal celebrations of love, such as a slow dance in the living room.

4.

 -Aretha Franklin

While this song has a bit of sadness to it, it's ultimately about the power of love to lift you up and make you feel good and natural - exactly like you were meant to be. It's highly appropriate for women who want to serenade their men.

5.

 -The Beatles

There are many potential entries for The Beatles on a best love songs list, but "Something" is a top pick. It describes understanding that you can't live without someone even if you can't put into words the reasons for your love. Other great Beatles love songs include "In My Life," "The Long and Winding Road" and "I Will."

6.

 -Peter Gabriel

If you've seen Say Anything, you know why this song has to crack the list of the best love songs of all time. In the movie, John Cusack's character serenades his ex-girlfriend with the song by holding a boombox up over his head at her bedroom window. This song speaks of what it is like to be away from the person you love.

7.

 -U2

This one isn't your typical love song, and it's kind of sad. However, the ultimate message of simply wanting the person you want and not caring about any of the promises we make in life is important.

8.

 -The Righteous Brothers

Some may find this song a little sappy and old-fashioned, but it still melts hearts whenever it is heard. It's one of the best slow-dance songs ever, and speaks of the perfect longing of love.

9.

 -Whitney Houston/Dolly Parton

Even though "I Will Always Love You" is really about saying goodbye to someone, it's still a popular love song because it talks about the things that we wish for the people we love, even if they can't return your love.

10.

 -Barry White

No list of the best love songs would be complete without a little Barry White. This song is so cheerful and also so powerful. It would be a great way to end a wedding reception, engagement party or any other celebration of love's possibilities.

i'm afraid i'm rather inclined to agree with peki. when i think true love, the first thing that pops into my mind is most certainly not the beach boys, U2, or whitney houston. :/ i personally would add "As," by Stevie Wonder (which encapsulates the eternity of real love through metaphor upon metaphor, as though-- lacking in words passionate enough to describe his feelings-- he tried to come as close as he could with what he knew), "La Vie En Rose," by Edith Piaf (the epitome of french romance and the simple joys of being in love expressed in one of the most beautiful languages on earth), and "I Saw the Light," by Todd Rundgren (the sudden, miraculous, breathtaking realization of being utterly in love with another human being. though, i must admit, i could be a little biased on this one, since it was the song playing during my first kiss with my husband). :)

Sorry you don't agree with our choices, Peki. What would you add to the list?
