Bleach is mentioned as part of the larger category of shounen action shows, although I would agree that it's among the better examples of that genre. Despite having loyal fan bases, Hellsing and Trigun were not highly rated at the review sites referenced in this article. We'll have to wait and see if Hellsing: Ultimate surpasses the original TV series once it is completed.

-- Contributed by: krisfinglackeyGlad you liked the list, Mika-chan. At the time this article was written, Ouran High School Host Club wasn't released in the U.S. It might not have even been released in Japan yet. It's definitely a recent fan-favorite, though.
-- Contributed by: LorieThis is great, thanks to whoever reviewed and created it. I'm surprised that Ouran High School Host Club isn't up here!
-- Contributed by: Mika-chanDeath Note wasn't released yet in the U.S. at the time this article was written, so it wasn't considered for the list. It can enjoy an honorary place at number 10 since it was originally published in Shonen Jump and it is classified as a shonen title. However, I agree with you that it is more of a psychological drama. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat with its interesting characters and twisting plot.
-- Contributed by: LorieDude... what about Death Note? I suppose it could fall in with #10 but it's more... more of a psychological/supernatural thriller sort of thing that deals with heavy subject matter and has amazingly complex and fascinating characters and a chilling plot... It really, really should be somewhere on this list.
-- Contributed by: Gaawa-chanBleach is actually included in the shounen action shows at #10, Taylor. Although it does seem a cut above many titles in that genre, with its involved storylines and interesting cast of characters, it still has some of the limitations of that genre, such as long training sequences, power ups, and extended fighting scenes. But it's certainly a popular series.
-- Contributed by: LorieBerserk does seem to be a popular title, Brad. There are just so many great series out there that some just didn't make the cut. I think the violence of Berserk keeps it from being a top pick for some people.
-- Contributed by: LorieWhat about Bleach?!!?!
-- Contributed by: Taylorwhere the f... is berserk the best the ever has been
-- Contributed by: bradThanks for the comment, Ashley. Everyone has his or her own taste in anime. This list was compiled using several different review sources to try to pick the best anime series possible, but it's just a starting point. It is lacking in shoujo titles like Fruits Basket; they just weren't topping the charts. Perhaps they at least deserved their own genre-related spot like shounen action shows at #10, for fans who love high school romance, drama, and comedy.
Some of the series you mention were not released in the U.S at the time the article was written, but they do seem to be popular shows. Perhaps in a few years, they will be considered classics like Samurai X and Macross.
-- Contributed by: LorieBut i really like Samurai X. That should be number one hands down!
-- Contributed by: AshleyWhat about other anime. like Utawarerumono, Saiyuki, Noir, Solty Rei, Fruits basket, Tushimime(melty blood), etc. They are also good animes. Do you disagree with me?
-- Contributed by: AshleyFMA is a personal favorite of mine, too. And it does seem silly to not be willing to try other shows. If you're a fan of a single anime, there's a good chance that there's at least one other show out there you would love. Thanks for the commment, winter32842!
-- Contributed by: LorieI love FMA. I can't compare FMA to the top listers since I never saw them. I hate those fans like Naruto fans, who never saw any other good anime except for that one and think it is the best.
-- Contributed by: winter32842Death Note wasn't available in the U.S. when this article was originally written. Since the series comes from a Shonen Jump manga, I suppose you could say that it's included under the generic "shonen action shows" label. However, Death Note seems just a cut above shows like Bleach and Naruto, if you're looking for a more intellectual story with lots of twists and turns.
-- Contributed by: Loriewhere is death note? it should be on this list.
-- Contributed by: motley crueThanks for the suggestions, Liyana. It sounds like you like the darker side of anime. Have you tried Hellsing and/or Hellsing Ultimate for a vampire fix or Gantz for some good old-fashioned violence?
Blood+, Black Lagoon, and Darker Than Black were not available in the U.S. at the time this article was originally written, but they seem to be receiving favorable reviews. In fact, Black Lagoon was included in an Anime News Network reviewers' list of the best anime of 2007 (www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2008-01-01). Elfen Lied is certainly a memorable series with its excessive violence, yet it doesn't seem to have earned the critical raves of other series that made the list. Fans of the show really love it, but others are just plain put off by it.
-- Contributed by: Loriehow about blood+ and black lagoon? i really think darker than black is really good also! ... and elfen lied??
-- Contributed by: LiyanaThanks for the suggestion, asdf. Eureka 7 has had some mixed reviews, but it certainly has its fans. Personally, I was drawn in by the great action sequences and the interesting cast of characters. I thought episodes 27 and 28 were especially powerful. Still, I felt the story dragged at times.
