It started on the Nintendo with the game Gradius and the code was added to many other games, allowing players to skip through more difficult gameplay with increased abilities and lives. The code gets its alternate name from the Nintendo game Contra where using it gives you 30 extra lives.

Players of Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox and PlayStation can enter codes on the in-game cell phone. There are many cell phone codes you can use in the game. For example, if you type in 1-999-Sky-fall, your player character will begin to fall down the map in a free fall motion. Type 1-999-buzz-off and a helicopter will appear for you to use. If you press B repeatedly while holding down the D-pad to whistle and running, your stamina will never run out. You can also use the sequence of moving the joystick forward in the direction you are climbing while having Link let go to get the infinite climbing exploit.

Available on the Wii U, you can get infinite lives in Super Mario 3D World. The exploit gives you 1,110 lives but there's no limit to repeating it. This cheat doesn't give you any boosts but fans of the game love it. When you use the dismemberment cheat, your light saber actually dismembers heads and limbs of your stormtrooper enemies. To get the cheat, use the shift and tilde (~) key together to get the console, and type in "helpusobi 1" then enter. Use cheat codes in The Sims on a PC or Mac by opening the console with Control+Shift+C. Entering the code of your choice will give you advantages such as disabling death and more money. For the money cheats, enter "motherlode" for $50,000 or "kaching" or "rosebud" for $1,000.
