Summer calls for squash, and with these companion plants to keep pests at buy, encourage growth, and pull those pollinators into your yard, you're off to a good start. Squash those doubts! You're going to need to start dreaming up squash recipes.
Quick Tip
If you enjoy squash blossoms, make sure there's no one taking a nap inside before you take a bite! Buzz buzz!
- Beets: Beat it! Literally. Beets grow rapidly, and your sensitive squash won't care for that. Unhappy roots make for an unhappy plant.
- Potatoes: If you want your squash to absorb maximum nutrients, skip the potatoes, which will claim all those good things for themselves. No thanks!
- Melons: Like potatoes, melons will zap all the nutrients from the soil, leaving your squash to wither. #SadSquash
- Cucumber: Don't mix your vines! Squash and cucumbers will compete for space and nutrients. The same goes for potatoes and anything in the squash family.
