Remember the scene in Father of the Bride when Steve Martin loses it over the "superfluous buns" in the grocery store? Well, we don't want you to have the same issue when you have more buns than hot dogs after your next dinner. That's why we figured out what to do with leftover hot dog buns so you can stay cool, calm, and collected in the bread aisle.
Ingredients
- Leftover hot dog buns
- 1 (16-ounce) jar of pizza sauce
- 1 to 2 cups of mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Toppings of your choice, such as pepperoni, sausage, onions, or mushrooms
Instructions
- Turn the broiler on in your oven.
- Open the hot dog buns and separate the sides. Place on a cookie or baking sheet.
- Spread the pizza sauce over the open bun halves.
- Add toppings of your choice.
- Sprinkle cheese on top of the buns.
- Place under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This may take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes, depending on your oven and the amount of cheese on each half. Stay close to the oven to make sure you don't burn the boats.

- Pour the mixture over the bread crumbles, making sure every piece is coated.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the bun pieces turn golden brown.
- Top with fresh berries and maple syrup to serve.
Need to Know
Anytime you're making a recipe with leftovers, keep in mind that you may need to adjust the other ingredient amounts to suit the serving you're able to make.
Ingredients
- Leftover hotdog buns, cut into ½" squares
- 1½ teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon parsley
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 2 to 4 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350° F.
- Put cut buns into a large bowl that comes with a lid.
- Whisk onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Pour seasoning mix over the buns, add the lid, and give it a few good shakes.
- Drizzle olive oil over the top. Start with one tablespoon; cover the bowl with the lid and shake. Open to assess whether another tablespoon is needed to coat the croutons. Continue until all the croutons are coated.
- Spread in a single layer on a cookie sheet and bake approximately 10 minutes, or until the croutons are dried and toasted.
- Whip up your sandwich elements — everything from scrambled eggs and bacon to sauteed vegetables and your favorite cheeses — and layer them in the bun.
- Turn the bun on its side and brush with butter and any herbs you like.
- Toast in the oven until the bun is golden, and your cheese is melted.
